Yes, Beer has jargon. Here are hints to decipher the sacred texts.

ABV: Alcohol By Volume, presented in percentage and basically tells how much alcohol is in your beverage. It can range from 2% to 12% but for the most part you’ll have it somewhere between 4-6 %.

IBU: International Bitterness Unit (For the ladies who abhor Beer for it’s bitterness, Crafts are kind enough to warn you) IBU is essentially a bitterness scale measured from 0-100. The higher the IBU the bitter-er the Beer. However, there is a “but” here and it comes in the form of malts. Malts also affect bitterness although they tend to contribute more towards sweetness.

Session: A session Beer is one with lower ABV. Usually within the 4% – 5% ABV range. The lower alcohol content makes it more practical to enjoy a couple of Beers within a short amount of time without completely dulling your senses. An ideal Beer to drink during lunch hour (if that’s your thing) or while dining with the in laws and you trying to keep your wits about you.
